A key to start/unlock your computer… is a lot safer than using a password. Here is why and how it works.

Why?

All common password problems have become obsolete with this product, like sharing, emailing, writing them on sticky notes, etc. Everybody knows that disk encryption is important, as the damage due to data loss is much larger than the damage to the loss of the related hardware. Normally you would encrypt your disk with a password. However, it is much more convenient and safer to unlock your device with a physical key. Not only for that owner, but also for the manager of said keys.

How it works

During the boot of your system, and before unlocking your system drive, your computer may scan the USB ports for an unlock passphrase. If such a key is present, then the computer does not have to ask the user for such an unlocking passphrase. Once the system drive is unlocked, the USB key may be removed.

During the boot you computer may already be Internet connected. When it is it can ask a remote server for the passphrase. Based on the IP address the server may determine whether or not the computer is stolen or not. When it is not stolen, then it allows to boot, otherwise it won’t.
